Direct contact
Physical contact between people — handshakes are the most obvious example in a work setting.
Droplet transmission
Coughing, sneezing and talking release respiratory droplets that can travel short distances to nearby people.
Airborne transmission
Smaller particles can remain suspended in air and travel further, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces — see indoor air quality.
Fomite (surface) transmission
Touching a contaminated surface, then touching the face — the route most directly addressed by disinfection and hand hygiene.
