Does Bleach Kill Germs?

Yes — diluted bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is an effective, EPA-recognised disinfectant against a broad range of bacteria and viruses when used correctly. It also comes with practical limitations worth knowing before you rely on it as a workplace standard.

The practical limitations

  • Corrosive to many materials — can damage metal fixtures, fabrics and certain finishes over repeated use
  • Requires correct dilution — too weak and it’s ineffective; too strong and it’s needlessly harsh and hazardous
  • Strong fumes — requires good ventilation, and is dangerous if mixed with other cleaning chemicals
  • No residual protection — once it dries, the surface has no ongoing protection until the next application
  • Degrades quickly — diluted bleach solutions lose potency within about 24 hours
