Does Vinegar Kill Germs? Separating Fact from Kitchen Folklore
Vinegar is a popular natural cleaning choice, but its disinfecting power is commonly overstated. Here’s what the evidence actually supports.
Household white vinegar (typically around 5% acetic acid) has some mild antibacterial properties and can reduce certain bacteria on surfaces. However, it is not registered with the EPA as a disinfectant, and studies generally show it’s significantly less effective than registered disinfectants against a broad range of bacteria, and largely ineffective against many viruses.
