When to See a Doctor for Flu

Most flu cases resolve at home with rest, but certain warning signs warrant prompt medical attention.

Warning signs warranting prompt medical attention

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Persistent chest or abdominal pain or pressure
  • Sudden dizziness, confusion, or difficulty waking
  • Severe or persistent vomiting
  • Symptoms that improve then return with worsening fever or cough
  • High-risk individuals (very young children, elderly, pregnant, immunocompromised) with any flu symptoms

This list reflects general public health guidance and is not exhaustive. If in doubt, contact a healthcare provider — erring on the side of caution costs little compared to a delayed response to a serious complication. From a workplace perspective, err on the side of a longer recovery period; see our sick leave policy guide for structuring flexible entitlement that doesn’t pressure a premature return.

This page is not medical advice and does not replace professional diagnosis. If you or someone else is experiencing a medical emergency, contact emergency services immediately.
