Does UV Light Kill Germs?
Yes, under the right conditions — UV-C light is a well-established germicidal technology. But “the right conditions” is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and it’s exactly where UV falls short for everyday occupied-space use.
How UV-C disinfection works
UV-C light damages the genetic material of bacteria and viruses, preventing them from reproducing. It’s genuinely effective — but effectiveness depends on direct, unobstructed exposure at a sufficient dose and duration.
Practical limitations in occupied spaces
- Line-of-sight only — shadowed surfaces, undersides and crevices aren’t reached
- Human safety concerns — most UV-C systems require the space to be unoccupied during treatment
- Dose and time-dependent — insufficient exposure time significantly reduces effectiveness
- No residual effect — once the light is off, there’s no ongoing protection until the next cycle
