Workplace Hygiene Policy Template
A written hygiene policy gives your team a clear, consistent standard to follow and gives managers a fair basis for raising concerns. Use the structure below as a starting point and adapt it to your facility and industry.
What a hygiene policy should cover
A policy that only lists rules tends to get ignored. Effective policies explain the reasoning, set clear expectations, and describe what support the organisation provides — from soap and sanitiser placement to background sanitisation and paid sick leave.
Recommended sections
- Purpose & scope — who the policy applies to and why it exists
- Personal hygiene expectations — handwashing, respiratory etiquette, uniform care
- Facility standards — cleaning frequency, restroom provisions, shared-equipment care
- Illness reporting — when to stay home and how to notify a manager
- Manager responsibilities — how concerns are raised and handled fairly
- Supporting infrastructure — sanitiser stations, signage, background air/surface treatment
- Review cycle — how often the policy is revisited
Sample policy statement
“[Company Name] is committed to providing a clean and healthy working environment. All employees are expected to follow good personal hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and staying home when unwell. In support of this, [Company Name] maintains scheduled cleaning, accessible sanitiser stations, and background surface sanitisation in shared spaces.”
Once your policy is written, pair it with a toolbox talk to introduce it to your team, and reinforce it with signage in shared areas. For the legal context behind these obligations, see our legislation and compliance guide.
